Frugal Friday: Fashion B&W

Black and white never fails to look effortlessly chic and classic. It looks even more so when it is an outfit made up of timeless pieces that are high quality and tailored. Take, for example, this look Miranda Kerr wore.

This outfit is great, and the little sidekick doesn't hurt either. What a cutie! Since Miranda Kerr is a supermodel, it's safe to assume none of these items came from a clearance rack, but let's see how we can recreate this outfit on a sensible budget.

Leggings: Ann Taylor, Shoes: DSW, Coat: Romwe, Tee shirt: Urban Outfitters, Hat: Revolve Clothing, Handbag: Overstock

Ta da! A Miranda Kerr look recreated for $405! You probably already own some of these items, like black leggings and a black leather handbag. Have fun mixing textures and prints in the same color family and you pretty much can't go wrong.

As always, when you can, buy your timeless pieces as an investment, and the more trendy items can be lower cost. This will make your wardrobe work for you and your classic pieces will last for years to come!

Ann Taylor faux leather leggings final sale for $39.88, DSW Bass Grayson Houndstooth Oxford sale for $69.94, Romwe Wool Coat final sale $31.33, Urban Outfitters Project Social Long-Sleeve Tee Sale for $24.99, Revolve Clothing Mirage Hat for $69.00, Overstock Chasse Wells Italian Leather Handbag $169.99

I love a winter look with an unexpected color palette! While I love greys and blacks just as much as the next person, sometimes my eyes are tired of the muted colors all around me and crave color in the winter. Today's Frugal Friday inspiration photo is satisfying that craving. With a dusty pink coat, pale blues, and fun accessories, this outfit shakes things up from the day to day brown boots, leggings, and oversized sweaters. It's a little bit glam, a little bit casual, and a lot cute.

I found this inspiration photo from New York Magazine online and loved the fun use of spring colors and the mixing of so many different looks into one, cohesive outfit. Let's recreate this pretty look on a reasonable budget, shall we?

Recreating a high-end look becomes much easier when the main pieces are simple, and the accessories are funky and trendy. This way, you can find pieces that you wont wear as often at a cheaper price and not worry about splurging on a $500 faux fur handbag you will wear 4 times.

I chose all discount items for this Frugal Friday look, but as always, I recommend investing in the pieces that will stand the test of time like good quality jeans, a nice warm coat, and always, always wear shoes that are comfortable! Nothing looks quite so fashionable as someone hobbling like a newborn giraffe in heels that are causing extreme pain.

Below are the links to where you can find the pieces for this look for under $200!

Chambray Shirt, Target, $22.99 / Light Blue Jeggings, American Eagle, $39.95 / Bouclé Coat, H&M, $25 sale / BCBG Paris Jaze Metallic Pump, DSW, $59.95 / River Island Claudia Sunglasses, ASOS, $24.64

Frugal Friday Fashion: Winter Looks

What's your favorite thing to search on Pinterest? For me, it's a toss up between new ways to braid my hair, interior design and outfits. It's great for days when you're feeling uninspired to hop on Pinterest and see what other people are doing with their winter wardrobe. A couple of weeks ago, I felt inspired, went shopping and then we played dress up! Christina took some pretty pictures to hopefully give you some ideas for those days when you just can't decide what to wear.

Today, we're sharing with you 4 fun winter outfits, where to get the pieces, and how to do it on a budget!

Outfit #1: Faux Fur Vest + Purple Bag

This look is really fun and very simple to pull together. All you need this:

If i had to guess, I'd say you probably have the basics already and may only need to find a good faux fur vest and perhaps a colorful handbag. When wearing a faux fur vest, I suggest keeping the rest of your look understated and neutral (except for a pop of color in a piece of jewelry or handbag).

Outfit #2: Complimentary Colors + Leopard

I absolutely love mixing and matching patterns, textures, and colors. It's a fun way to make an outfit go from pretty to super pretty and interesting. When mixing and matching like this, ground your look in a color scheme to maintain continuity. In this outfit, I used blues and greys which were repeated throughout the look. The leopard print top picks up on the blue and grey colors which are echoed throughout the outfit in the shoes, bag, and coat. The skirt, a nice bright yellow, is complimentary to the blue and is a fun and unexpected color in cold winter months.

Here are the ingredients for this look:

Outfit #3 Black + Black + Gold + Green

Black is chic. It just is! In the cold winter months, darker, more moody colors have their time to shine, and we think this is a great way to do it. It's comfy with the oversized sweater and tights, and sweet with the pleated skirt.

I like this outfit because of the variety of textures with only subtle differences in colors. Grandmama and Mama, I know you both hate these boots, don't worry, I wont be wearing them to Christmas dinner :) But for those of you who don't hate them, I'll tell you where to get them!

*For years, I thought anything approaching the $100 mark was not to be considered "budget". However, I suggest putting your clothing budget towards high quality shoes and coats in the winter. You don't need to spend $1,000 on a coat or $500 on shoes to get high quality. A good coat will last you years as will the shoes--and they will keep you from needing to spend extra money seeing a podiatrist. Invest in the staples, save on the trendy items.

Frugal Friday: Interiors, Winter Warm Sunroom

Do you guys remember Lindsey Hene, the beautiful designer we did the Spotlight on a few weeks ago?

Now you do, right?  Well Lindsey shared with us this awesome sunroom makeover she did on budget.  We thought with the onset of this frigid weather, it was a great time to show you a sunroom makeover, and of course being Frugal Friday, it is on a budget.  We hope this inspires you to find a sunny spot in your home and create a cozy space from which to soak in some vitamin D during these cold winter months.

Before

Before

Paint is always a major room changer, and when done right can totally make the room.  As you can see, the doors and windows, a light stained wood; the walls and ceiling, a dull neutral, didn't do anything to beautify the space.  By painting all the trim a bright, cheery white, the walls a nice light neutral and the ceiling a sky blue white, the entire feel of the room was transformed.  By choosing paint colors that complimented the existing floor, the homeowners saved a ton of money by not replacing it.

The wicker that was once was black, was painted the nice soft blue ceiling hue to bring the color down and throughout and finish out this refreshing pallet.  The best part of this part of the transformation it only cost the paint which was a couple hundred bucks.

To address all of the windows in a cost saving, yet stylish manner, simple black rods and ready-made panels in soft blue from Bed Bath and Beyond were added.  The two white chairs are slipcovered chairs from IKEA with West Elm throws and pillows for accents. We embellished an floor lamp was original to the homeowners and with a little bit of red grosgrain ribbon it received new life.

The cute little end table is from West Elm, and the red gourd lamps from Homegoods.

Custom-made cushions and pillows of the refinished wicker furniture were a splurge, but really added that custom, finishing touch to the space.  A small ottoman from Homegoods in the middle of the room allowed spatial flow while still offering a little perch for a tray and goodies such as hot chocolate and a book for the winter months.

We hope that you take these bright and cheery images and create a warm, wintery oasis somewhere in your own home!

Frugal Friday: Our Top 10 Beauty Products

There are a lot of beauty products out there, so many that it's incredibly difficult to know which are good and which are not worth your money. Do you really need that super lifting spider serum and anti-magnetic cream? I'm pretty sure neither of those things exist--but if they do, I wouldn't mind trying a sample to see if they really do work!

We are here to help you sift through some of the good stuff with our Top 10 Beauty Product list!

10. PSSSST!

This stuff is a hair saving miracle! Woke up late? Have a great hairdo but your hair is a liiiiittle dirty? Psssst! is your new dry shampoo secret weapon. It's super affordable (about $5-$6 a can) and doesn't leave a weird powdery look to your hair. Spray on and comb through with your fingers and you're looking AND smelling good all day long.

9. Dr. Jart BB Cream

SPF 45, light coverage, non comedogenic, all around miracle. Best part? You don't have to wonder what color you wear or end up with the dreaded orange mask situation. There are a couple colors to choose from that somehow magically blend to match your skin. Light-medium, medium-dark. This BB cream will keep your skin protected from the sun while making your complexion look smooth and natural (Your freckles aren't totally hidden! Hooray!). It's $39 for a tube that lasts months and months.

8. Versace Bright Crystal Perfume

A good perfume that you love is a great addition to your beauty regime. One of my personal favorites is Versace Bright Crystal. It smells fresh, very very lightly floral, and citrusy. It's not too heavy or too strong. I love it! The scent that works for you varies from person to person and you'll need to smell and try on many to know what works for you. In fact, your body chemistry can change the way a perfume smells on you, so be sure to try one out before making the purchase. A go-to perfume that feels like "you" is a nice way to feel just a little bit more fancy. Versace Bright Crystal is $52 for a 1oz bottle.

7. Obsessive Compulsive Makeup Brush

The right tools are key when applying makeup. To get a flawless finish that isn't cakey or oily, try this brush by Obsessive Compulsive. It's fantastic and leaves your face looking much more natural than the brush that comes with your compact. As a general rule, those shouldn't be used for actually applying makeup. With this brush, you're left with a dewey and soft look that cannot be achieved by applying makeup with your fingers. $28 for a nice big powder brush.

6. Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisturizer

The best start for a fresh face is a sunscreen protected and moisturized base! An SPF oil-free moisturizer is essential to keeping your skin healthy and youthful-looking. I love Neutrogena because it is not heavily scented and is dermatologist tested. I have pretty sensitive skin and this stuff is super gentle, never causing breakouts! $10 for a nice big tube!

5. Benefit CORALista Blush

Benefit makes excellent products! I stand behind this blush because it looks incredibly natural on my pale complexion, but looks beautiful on more olive skin women as well. Obviously, there are many colors available but this is my personal favorite. Find the one that suits your skin tone and give yourself a natural-looking sun-kissed glow even in the gloomiest of winter days. $28!

4. Vaseline Spray and Go Lotion

This is a must for your gym bag. I love the feeling of my skin when it's moisturized but I hate the feeling of slimy lotion when I'm trying to get back into my skinny jeans after a workout and shower. Noooo thank you! Here's the solution! $6.50 of conveniently moisturized skin!

3. E.L.F. Eyelash Curler

I cannot endorse this enough! A $3 investment for wider, more open eyes--incredible! An eyelash curler kind of looks like a torture device, but for me, it's an every morning must. Even if I don't wear mascara that day, your eyes will instantly look more awake and bright and you will still look like you!

2. Olay Regenerist Night Cream

It's true what they say on the commercials; you don't have to spend $300 on a night cream to get a good anti-aging product. Olay Regenerist is smooth and silky, doesn't feel too heavy, moisturizes skin and repairs it as you sleep. It even smells nice, too! $20 to a younger-looking you.

1. Anastasia Brow Wiz

Eyebrows do a great job of framing your face and a nice filled in brow frames it even better! The Anastasia Brow Wiz allows you to fill in as much or as little as you like all the while looking like you "woke up like this". Available in many colors to suit your particular coloring and taste. I use caramel and it blends nicely with my red hair. $21!

Dry Shampoo, BB Cream, Perfume, Makeup Brush, Moisturizer, Blush, Lotion, Eyelash Curler, Night Cream, Brow Pencil

Frugal Friday: North Georgia Fall Fun

Fall is upon us, finally! Now is the perfect time to head to North Georgia for some fall fun!  Here is the perfect fall day according to Ends In Style:

Amicalola Falls

Amicalola State Park is located in Dawsonville, GA just up 400.  The Park is open from 7am to 10pm and parking costs $5.00 but if you don't have cash, don't worry, they take cards at the Visitor's Center.  Once you get there, you can head to the top a few different ways; if you have a dog with you, I don't suggest the stairs because they are a metal grating and hurt those little paws.  Take a look at the trail map and you will see a couple more trails up the falls.  If you don't have a pup with you, hit the stairs and get a great butt workout, then coast down the side of the mountain for some great panoramic views.  If you want a longer hike, this is also the site of an Appalachian trailhead, my dad and brother did a 20 mile round trip hike one day, so you can make it as long of a hike as you want!

Uncle Shucks Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch

If Amicalola Falls didn't totally wear you out, check out Uncle Shuck's Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch.  They are open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.  Every Friday and Saturday night in October they also have a $13.00 ticket for a Haunted Maze and 2 Regular Mazes.  Click HERE for a $1.00 off coupon!

North Georgia Premium Outlets

Need to fill in your fall wardrobe?  This is the perfect weekend to checkout the North Georgia Premium Outlets while you are in Dawsonville!  We love their Nike Outlet, Saks Off 5th, and many other stores.  Its never a disappointment when we hit this outlet.  Here is a complete list of stores.

Dawsonville Pool Room

After you have run around Dawsonville, you are probably starving, so stop by the Pool Room in Dawsonville.  A great burger joint that is friendly to non beef eaters!  Make sure you order the delicious hand cut fries and GIANT onion rings!

Now go home and take yourself a nice long nap in front of a football game on TV...

Frugal Friday: Fashion

This post goes out to all the ladies!

It’s a special date night on a summer evening and you naturally, have nothing to wear. You want to look effortless, chic, and sexy. So you turn to the internet to find some inspiration from celebrity fashion. This can so easily turn into a rabbit hole of frustration because if you’re anything like me, you don’t have 16 pairs of Christian Louboutin shoes, are not close, personal friends with Herve Leger and do not own a single piece of Tiffany jewelry. How on earth will you pull together a look that is as fabulous as that of your celebrity style icons’? With frugality, that’s how!

One of the many fashionable actresses I look to for style inspiration is the incomparable Charlize Theron. She can pretty much do no wrong. With talent that just wont quit, and legs that go for days, she looks beautiful in everything. This casual red carpet look is a little bit rock and roll but the LWD (Little White Dress) that is oh-so-in this season softens the edgier vibe.

Charlize, lookin' fab

Charlize, lookin' fab

Charlize’s look is a Stella McCartney dress ($1,200) Stella McCartney chain clutch bag ($800), with Giuseppe Zanotti cap toe pumps ($465), and Christian Dior Earrings ($700), for a grand total of $3,165!

But wait! Before throwing a fit because you don't have a spare $3,200 for a date night outfit, let's try to put a little something beautiful together that is actually affordable!

You, lookin' fab

You, lookin' fab

To recreate this look on a reasonable budget, I found a Zara dress (retail $59.90, on sale now for $29.99), Steve Madden Deceptve pumps ($77.98), an Olivia + Joy Tessa clutch (retail $78, on sale now for $53.99), and ALDO Therong Stone Set Flower Stud earrings ($15.24).  The grand total for our look is $177.20! With a high neckline like this, I recommend wearing hair swept back in a simple up-do (like a messy pony or loose sock bun) to show off the detail of the dress and your beautiful face.

What do you think? Is this a look you’d like to try? Whose celebrity style inspires you?

We'd love to hear from you!

- Susannah Roupe
