Here in Atlanta, it isn't very cold yet, but we have had a few snaps of chilly weather here and there. Despite the 70 degree days into December, the air is still dry and that means a change needs to be made to your daily skincare regimen!
Recently, I talked to my good friend Carly Holloway, a skincare expert and makeup artist, about what to do for your skin during the winter months to keep that healthy glow and avoid the dreaded flaky look. Here is what she said you need to do to look beautiful all year long:
1. Switch up Your Regimen
Make sure you moisturize every single day. You may want to switch your cleanser to something more creamy and gentle so you don't strip your skin of the precious oils it needs this time of year, and take it easy on strong astringents or other more harsh cleansing products. Continue to reach for moisturizing makeup products but be sure to avoid lotions and foundations containing oil since that can cause breakouts.
2. Splurge on Professional Treatments
Now is a great time to splurge on professional care like a microdermabrasion treatment, if you can afford it. If not, you can splurge on the next best thing and get a Clarisonic cleaning system (pictured above). These treatments remove dead skin and impuritites from your skin revealing a layer of new, beautiful skin beneath it. Both can be pricey, so this is a great time to add something to your Christmas wish list or to start saving!
Another professional service Carly recommends is a silk peel. Silk peels infuse your skin with a solution tailored to what it needs. If you're interested in any of these treatments, be sure to talk to your dermatologist or find a licensed skincare specialist to give you the expert advice and treatment your skin needs.
3. See Your Doctor
A yearly visit to a dermatologist is very important! Each year, you should see your doctor for an examination to screen for skin cancer or other diseases. Now is a great time to make an appointment since most procedures at the dermatologist require that you not be exposed to much sunlight afterwards--this may make dipping into the pool in the summer months a bit of a challenge, so it is recommended that you see your doctor now.
4. Try Some New Products
I love trying new products, but I want to know they've been tried and tested first. Thankfully for all of us, Carly has some recommendations of great products to try and some to skip.
1. Eye creams are not worth $400. You do not need to splurge on something like a really fancy eye cream, save your money there and invest it in more substantial products you will get more use out of.
2. Dove makes a fantastic bar of soap! Carly has been using a Dove Beauty Bar to wash her face and says it is fantastic*!
3. For a little fancier skincare product that works wonders, try Skinceutical- B5 Hydrating Masque. Ever have that flaky skin issue in the winter when your makeup clings to areas you simply wanted to cover, not call attention to? Well, not any more if you try this! Try this two ways: put on a thin layer, go to sleep, wash face like normal in the morning, OR put on a thin layer, start rinsing a little, (it will be really slippery) then pat dry with a towel. Flaky skin is GONE!
5. Take Care of Yourself
These few tips pretty much go for everything in life: eat well, get a good night's sleep, drink plenty of water, and wear a sunscreen moisturizer every day!
*After 4-5 weeks of use, so this has not be an exhaustive study yet. Carly recommends trying it for yourself and so do we! It's gentle and affordable and online reviews are excellent.
