Women (And Men) Be Shoppin!

The "women be shoppin" joke has been alllll over TV and the internet, but it always brings me back to the first movie I had on VHS tape to go with my TV/VCR combo I got for Christmas in 1997. That movie was The Nutty Professor. This post isn't about the Nutty Professor (disappointing, I know!), but do yourself a favor and reminisce the Dave Chappelle comic spoof here that started it all.

Atlanta Celebrates Photography

As a photographer and a photo stylist, we are obviously pretty big fans of pictures. It's an art that is close to our hearts, and is one that can so clearly capture love, pain, joy, and the full breadth of human emotions and creations.

Photos are such an important part of our culture. After all, when someone gets married, they have photos taken, when someone completes a work of art or design, they have it photographed for their portfolio. And when we see images of people in need or of historical events, we are moved and connected to the story.

If you love photography like we do, you're in luck! Atlanta Celebrates Photography has hit the scene. Our city's heartbeat is our thriving art scene thanks to the Art Institute and SCAD, along with other colleges and universities drawing creative minds to Atlanta. In addition to the local art schools, Atlanta's culture draws people from near and far who are art enthusiasts or artists themselves.

Atlanta Celebrates Photography is happening throughout the city this month. You can find works of art, attend lectures, check out some films, and enjoy all that this festival has to offer no matter which area of the city you live in. Check out the festival guide here to find out where and when to be for all of the best of Photography in Atlanta.

Shopping Local: Fab'rik

Shopping is so much fun. Buying new clothes gives me that feeling of "ahhh, my wardrobe is so cute!" But sometimes it is followed by a feeling of guilt that maybe I didn't really need that new dress after all, or maybe I should have purchased a cute new dress from a local shop instead of supporting a company that is far from Atlanta. Whatever the reason for the guilt, I think we have a solution (aside from not shopping anymore--which is kind of unthinkable sometimes).

Supporting our local economy is something that is important to many of us, and yet, often times it can be cost prohibitive to shop at boutiques rather than the more affordable chain stores that can offer deep discounts all year long.

Thanks to Dana Spinola, founder and CEO of the boutique Fab'rik, which is a very affordable shop located right here in Atlanta, you can now get trendy clothes that wont break the bank AND you can support a local business all at once.

The first several Fab'rik locations were here in our city before the store expanded to have many more locations over the last few years. Obviously, Dana found a model that worked for local women!

Not living right in the city? No worries! Fab'rik is expanding rapidly to cities all around Georgia and beyond. Georgia locations include: Athens, Atlantic Station, Augusta, Avalon, Buckhead, Citywalk, Dunwoody, East Cobb, Emory, The Forum, Macon, Mall of Georgia, Peachtree City, Savannah, Suwanee, Valdosta, and West Cobb. Additional stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. Needless to say, this boutique is as convenient as finding a chain store but with the benefit of supporting local business.

Looking for something bold and trendy but don't want to pay too much? Fab'rik is the place! They've got clothing, shoes, and accessories at very reasonable price points so you wont feel bad about trying out that look you aren't sure you can pull off (you probably can!).

So, if you need an outfit for a special event or just want to try something cute and trendy but you want to save money, try out Fab'rik and shop local! No time to get out and shop? You can even shop online here. Happy shopping! We know your trip to Fab'rik will end in style :)

Spotlight On: Angela Beaver

Since it is the new year and everyone is focused on taking care of themselves, we decided to put the spotlight on someone who specializes in just that! Today is a spotlight on Angela Beaver, yogi, and yoga instructor. Let's get to it!

How did you get your start?

I started practicing yoga in 2006. I was hooked as soon as I stepped on the mat! I started to play with the idea of teaching several years later. I held off for a while due to my fear of public speaking and just the idea of me teaching a class was terrifying. I decided 2012 was the year! I threw all that fear to the side and signed up for teacher training. I began teaching in spring that year. I still get nervous from time to time but I love what I do!  I would not change it for anything! Being a yoga instructor is challenging sometimes but it is also very, very rewarding.

Was there one job or contact that set the course of your career?

Nirvana Yoga! This was the studio I started my practice at also where I trained. I taught my first classes there and I still teach a class there!

What is your favorite/most successful way to advertise?

I prefer social media and SEO (search engine optimization) AKA a Google search.

If there was one thing you could change about your career, what would it be?

That the business side of yoga was just as Zen.

What is your favorite stress reliever?

Well…let me think about that...yoga! I would say specifically a yummy restorative class with lots of props, hands on adjustments and essential oils. I also find meditation to be quite magical. Last but not least, massage!

What is your favorite destination?

ITALY! ITALY and more Italy.

WE LOVE ATLANTA!

Date Night in the Sky

I don't know about you, but ever since i can remember, when the weather starts to transition from summer to fall, I daydream about date nights. What would I wear? Something like a peanut butter leather moto jacket over a flowing creamy white silk tank, dark wash skinny jeans, and pointy stilettos with a snazzy clutch…ahhh. Where do I go for this fun date night?

Imagine a breezy late summer night, you and your sweetie hand-in-hand looking out over the city and taking in the view. From up high you can see Centennial Olympic Park, the CNN Center, Phillips Area, and a host of other glassy buildings flickering in the evening light.

The VIP gondolas have Ferrari leather seats and glass floors! Ooh la la!

Around Town: Labor Day Weekend

If you have had a month like mine, you are so ready for the long weekend!

Usually I don't give a thought to what the Labor Day Holiday is for, I'm just so thankful to have it off.  But, when I sat down to write this post I realized I have no idea what Labor Day marks other than the age old question of whether or not we should wear white after it...

If you haven't been to it yet, you have got to check it out!  It's a great event for all ages, and all interests.  You will see everything from Storm Troopers, to Ninja Turtles, to Men in Black.  People are so creative and some work all year on their costumes (or Ghost Busters station wagon) and they look like the real thing.  Get there early and bring a chair.  I recommend taking Marta (dress up if you want to fit in with everyone on the train), finding a shady spot and bringing snacks and drinks especially if you have kids with you.  Enjoy!

Oh and here's one more reason to go to the parade...
